St Andrew's Cathedral Choir

ABOUT US

Being part of the music ministry is a particularly rewarding and satisfying way to make a contribution to the life of St Andrew’s Cathedral. Our role is to provide sacred music at masses and services and lead and support the congregation in full and active participation in the liturgy.

Since the Cathedral closed in August 2009 for renovations, Sunday mass has been held in the Eyre Hall within the Archdiocesan Curial Offices in Clyde Street at 10am and 12 noon with the choir leading the music at the noon mass.

There are currently 21 members within the music ministry including 3 organists, 7 cantors, 2 guitarists, an oboeist, a composer and of course a hardcore of dedicated choristers, ranging in ages from 22 to 82!

Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm til 8.30pm in the Chapel House in Dunlop Street when we prepare our Sunday music and liturgy, plan forthcoming events and discuss future projects - preceded of course by the obligatory tea and biscuits!

We embrace and utilise a diverse range of musical styles and cultures from Gregorian chant to traditional and contemporary hymns and choral pieces, to folk and celtic inspired canticles, with a little bit of Mozart, Schubert and Bach thrown in, thereby hopefully enhancing the enjoyment and understanding of the liturgy for regulars and visitors alike.

Over the past year we have participated in Archdiocesan music and liturgy workshops which are extremely valuable musically, liturgically and socially.  It enables us to meet and exchange ideas with music groups from other parishes and keeps us abreast of new developments.

ON TOUR!

The choir is proud to represent St Andrew’s Cathedral at various services and events throughout the Archdiocese, collaborating with other Church music groups, including the St Mungo Singers, most recently at the Mass for the Artistic Community at St Michael’s, Parkhead in November 2009, and the Mass of Our Celtic Roots in St Aloysius, Garnethill in January 2010.

We were invited to lead the music at this year’s Easter Triduum celebrations at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral in Abercromby Street and, following many weeks of rehearsals, our hard work resulted in an enjoyable and successful partnership with the musicians and clergy at St Mary’s, culminating in a prayerful and moving Triduum for everyone involved.

We reprised our collaboration with St Mary’s this Pentecost Sunday when we provided the music at a mass to welcome the newly baptised and confirmed into the Catholic faith. The main celebrant was Archbishop Conti and we were honoured to be a part of such a joyous and special occasion.

We were on the road yet again in June when we headed north to St. Aloysius in Springburn to sing at a wedding, and again at the end of the month when we returned to the Pro-Cathedral to lead the music in the 90th anniversary mass of the Knights of St Columba Province 1, once again in the presence of His Grace,  Archbishop Conti.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

Now that all the excitement of the Papal Mass is behind us, we are looking ahead to our next event, which will be the annual Mass for the Artistic Community, due to take place on 21st November at St Michael’s, Parkhead. This will be the third time we have participated in this particular service. We also expect to collaborate in Vespers for St Andrew’s Day on 28th November at St. Peter’s Partick with the St Mungo Singers and other diocesan choirs and will begin work on the music for these events shortly.
